Preservation, restoration and utilization of species’ and breed diversity of aboriginal farm animals of Ukraine

Work number - P 13 FILED

Presented Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics named after M.V. Zubtsia of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine

One of the world problems of the second half of the XX - early XXI centuries is the preservation of biological diversity, in the context of which a significant place is occupied by farm animals. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), at least 1,500 of the world's estimated 6,000 breeds are endangered.

In the context of consideration of this issue, a number of theoretical and practical developments were made by the group of authors, which formed the work to implement the objectives of the Global Plan of Action in the field of animal genetic resources. Among such tasks it should be noted the categorization of all breeding resources according to risk statuses, proposed by I.V. Guzev in 2012. Colour lists of animal genetic resources were created according to the proposed cataloging: black, white, red, green. According to the results of the analysis, it turned out that in all Ukrainian breeding livestock only 118 or 19.8% (1/5 of all considered representatives of four classes and one subclass) of populations are characterized by a completely normal survival status - Out of the risk zone.

The calculation of the effective number of gene pool micropopulations and their selection formations for different breeds of farm animals is carried out.

The role, place and state of modern genetic resources in animal breeding of Ukraine are revealed. The level of support for such resources in animal breeding of different countries is shown.

The role and place of consolidation of selection formations in the preservation of the gene pool of farm animals is clarified.

The role of biotechnology in the preservation of animal gene pool and biotechnological developments, in particular, artificial insemination, embryo transplantation and the use of epididymal sperm as a more acceptable and viable technology for cryopreservation in pig breeding is highlighted. On the basis of this methodology the Myrhorod pig breed is going to be restored. The leading role of quality assessment of embryos and oocytes for their further successful use is shown.

Valuable qualities of aboriginal breeds for their successful use in the craft direction are investigated.

The results of the research in the fish farming became the basis for planning and implementing measures for the artificial reproduction of rare and endangered species of aboriginal ichthyofauna of the Carpathian region. Among the molecular genetic studies in carp farming is the determination of breed-specific features of spontaneous mutagenesis of Ukrainian carp breeds.
