This paper solves the important scientific and technical problem of operational safety of critical and potentially dangerous structures by means of installation of continuous acoustic-emission monitoring systems.
Scientific concepts and techniques were developed to assess the actual condition of structure materials while in operation without shutting down. Methods and instruments were developed and implemented for continuous acoustic-emission monitoring of four large-capacity ammonia storage tanks at Odessa Port Plant.
The executed work was the first one on the territory of Ukraine; some of its components, such as equipping of large-capacity facilities (30 000 ton), automated risk assessments, on-line prediction of destructive load and residual life are ones of a kind in the world for this sector.

Economic benefits of implementation include the increased level of anthropogenic operational safety of liquid ammonia storage tanks and reduced costs for maintenance and inspection of structure conditions. More than 10 years of operation resulted in saving of more than 70 million hryvnas.

Scientific results of this work were described in more than 200 publications, including articles, conference abstracts, State Standards of Ukraine and industry standards, normative documents of Dershgirpromnaglyad (State Service of Mining Supervision and Industrial Safety of Ukraine), workbooks, instructions and manuals. Novelty and competitive ability of engineering solutions are proved by about 30 invention certificates and patents. On the basis of the subject 2 ScD dissertations and 1 PhD dissertation were defended.
